CYOD is the new BYOD: Keep Your Devices Safe and Secure

Everyone has heard of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) and it’s an approach that many companies were happy to take before the pandemic. BYOD devices were and still are popular choices with employees who worked part-time, freelance, or in the physical office for just one or two days a week.

So what is the issue with a BYOD device? In one word, security. Left unmanaged, the responsibility to keep the device secure is left entirely in the hands of the employee. The employee may not be in a position to invest in security and human error means that important updates and security patches can be easily forgotten about.

It also means that sensitive company data can easily be obtained when the staff member is working from other less secure networks or from a vulnerable firewall. While it may seem cost-effective in the short-term, it could end up being very costly to the business should that data end up in the wrong hands.

A CYOD (Choose Your Own Device) policy has been adopted by an increasing number of businesses over the last year. More and more evidence shows that mobile devices are the key to increased productivity and giving employees a choice in a way that is safe and secure for the business is becoming more popular.

With CYOD companies can choose from a set of pre-approved Apple devices with all the apps they need already installed and configured with all the necessary security protocols.

Being given a choice also provides the employee with a  good degree of freedom and allows the company to manage the device while also allowing safeguarded personal use. A survey carried out by Jamf recently showed that 77% of enterprise employees would be more likely to stay at their company if they offered employee choice, or that they would go elsewhere to join a program that offered it.

Adopting a CYOD policy also ensures that all company data is kept secure and increases productivity as employees don’t have to spend time carrying out system updates, sometimes on aged or slow devices.

DARE understands that a CYOD policy is fast becoming the preferred way for an organisation to manage their devices and keep their data secure. Providing your team with an option of Apple devices also improves employee satisfaction, as the investment shows you are committed to providing a high quality service and keeping both customer and staff needs a priority.
